The Center for Cryptography and Distributed Systems Opened Its Doors at UBA

On October 23, 2025, the inaugural ceremony of the Center for Cryptography and Distributed Systems (CCSD) took place at the Palace of the University of Buenos Aires. The event was attended by authorities from the Rectorate, the Faculties of Exact and Natural Sciences and Engineering, and representatives from the public and private sectors.

The CCSD is a research and training unit approved by the Rectorate's Superior Council. Its goal is to consolidate academic activity within UBA around modern cryptography, distributed systems, and blockchain technologies — areas that have grown in relevance in both industry and scientific research in recent years, but have historically lacked critical mass in universities across the region.

What exactly does the Center do?

Modern cryptography goes far beyond encrypting messages: it encompasses techniques such as Zero-Knowledge Proofs, which allow information to be verified without revealing it, and is one of the pillars of secure distributed systems. Distributed systems, in turn, are the foundation upon which blockchain networks are built, but also critical internet infrastructure, cloud services, and financial systems.

The CCSD works at the intersection of both areas, with a focus on open research and human resource development. Its activities include undergraduate and graduate scholarships, new undergraduate courses (Blockchain Fundamentals and Applications, Introduction to Modern Cryptography, Smart Contract Programming and Verification), and research projects with faculty from FIUBA and Exactas.

The center is funded by LambdaClass, an Argentine software development company specializing in blockchain and distributed infrastructure, which made a donation to the University of Buenos Aires. Of this amount, USD 250,000 has already been allocated to scholarships. Instruction is technology-agnostic, and the content does not favor any particular blockchain platform.
